Common issues

Use these checks when SEOEngine does not behave as described in the feature guides. These are troubleshooting steps, not diagnoses. If a problem continues after you check the items below, Contact for help.

App embed shows Inactive

Storefront SEO features and speed optimizations load only when the SEOEngine app embed is enabled.

  1. Open the Dashboard and check App Embed status.
  2. If the status is Inactive, select the activation option (or Enable app from Get started).
  3. In the theme editor, turn on the SEOEngine app embed toggle.
  4. Select Save, then return to SEOEngine and confirm the status shows Active.

See Quick start and Dashboard.

Password-protected storefront

If the online store is password-protected, SEOEngine cannot scan page performance or apply certain storefront optimizations until the password is verified.

  1. On the Dashboard, look for a password warning.
  2. Enter the storefront password and select Verify.
  3. Open Performance again and retry scanning or optimizations.

See Dashboard and Performance.

Stale scan or sync data

If SEO overview counts or audit lists look out of date after catalog or content changes in Shopify:

  1. On the Dashboard, select Sync now to refresh the app’s data.
  2. Select Re-scan to update overview counts.
  3. Depending on store size, syncing may take a few minutes.
  4. For languages, open SettingsLanguages and select Sync languages, then confirm Current languages matches Shopify.

See Dashboard, SEO analysis criteria, and Languages.

Indexing credential or setup errors

If URL submission fails in Indexing:

  1. Confirm Enable Google Indexing or Enable Bing Indexing is turned on as needed.
  2. Check that the Google Service Account JSON key was uploaded and that the in-app setup guide steps for Search Console access were completed.
  3. Check that the Bing Webmaster API key is entered, or use Generate key if the app prompts you.
  4. Verify credentials are valid and that service accounts have appropriate permissions for your verified shop domain.
  5. Select Save, then try submitting again.

See Indexing and Connect search engines.

Site verification does not complete

If ownership verification fails on the external platform:

  1. In SEOEngine, open Site verification and confirm Enable site verification is on.
  2. Check that you pasted only the plain verification code or the <meta> tag format indicated in the app field.
  3. Select Save, then return to the platform and use its Verify action again.

See Site verification.

Performance optimization issues

If a performance optimization fails or the storefront shows visual display issues after you run speed optimizations:

  1. Open Performance and review which optimizations succeeded or failed.
  2. Adjust your selections and run the optimization wizard again.
  3. Revert applied settings from the active optimizations list if needed.
  4. Select Rescan after theme updates to refresh scores.

See Performance.

Restore warnings

Some restore actions permanently remove custom files or rules from your theme. Confirm before you continue:

  • Robots.txt: Restore Shopify default deletes your custom rules from the active theme and cannot be undone.
  • LLMs.txt: Restore Shopify default permanently deletes templates/llms.txt.liquid from your theme and cannot be undone.
  • Image optimization: Revert is available only when a backup exists. Select Keep backup for restoration before optimizing if you want restore available later. Revert is unavailable while optimization is running.

See Robots.txt, LLMs.txt, and Image compression.
