Quick start
Enable the SEOEngine app embed in your theme and complete the Get started checklist on the Dashboard. These tasks set up the core features so the app can analyze your store, optimize images and page speed, and manage broken links.
Before you begin
- SEOEngine is installed and open in your Shopify admin
- You can edit the published theme in the Shopify theme editor
- You know your storefront password if the online store is password-protected
Expected result
After you finish this guide:
- App Embed status on the Dashboard shows Active
- The Get started checklist steps for SEO Audit, image optimization, speed optimization, and 404 redirects are marked complete as you finish them
- You can open the related feature pages from Get started or from the app navigation
Get started checklist
The Get started card on the Dashboard guides you through five setup tasks. Expand the card to see your progress, open a step for details, and use the step button to open the related page in the app.
You can collapse the guide to free up space on the Dashboard, or select Dismiss if you prefer to configure features on your own. Steps are marked complete as you finish them.
Enable the app
The SEOEngine app embed must be turned on in your Shopify theme before storefront SEO features can run. You can enable it from Get started or from the App Embed status card.
- From your Shopify admin, open SEOEngine.
- On the Dashboard, select Enable app.
- In the theme editor, turn on the toggle for the SEOEngine app embed.
- Select Save.
After you save, return to SEOEngine. App Embed status should show Active.
If the status is Inactive, storefront SEO features and speed optimizations will not load on your store until you enable the embed.
SEO Audit
SEO Audit helps you review your store’s current SEO status and find issues that affect search visibility, such as meta titles, meta descriptions, indexing settings, and page structure.
From Get started, select Run audit to open SEO Audit. Browse pages by type—products, collections, pages, blog posts, or home page—then open an item to update its SEO settings.
For detailed steps on scanning and editing pages, see SEO Audit.
Optimize images
Optimize images compresses store images to reduce file size and support faster loading for customers and crawlers.
From Get started, select Optimize now to open Image optimization. Choose the image sources and compression options you want, then select Optimize now to start processing. You can also set up image alt text in bulk from the same area.
For compression options, alt text templates, and image history, see Image compression and Image alt text templates.
Speed optimization
Speed optimization applies performance improvements to your storefront, such as CSS and JavaScript minification, image-related optimizations, and lazy loading.
From Get started, select Speed up now to open Performance. Review the available optimizations, turn on the ones you want to apply, and confirm to run them on your current theme.
If your online store is password-protected, enter your storefront password on the Dashboard and select Verify before speed scanning and optimizations can run.
For metric details and optimization options, see Performance.
Set up 404 redirects
Set up 404 redirects helps you detect broken URLs and send visitors to the correct destination instead of an error page.
From Get started, select Set up to open Redirects. On the Auto redirects tab, turn on Enable auto redirects, choose where broken links should send visitors, and save your settings. You can also review broken links and create manual redirect rules from Redirects.
For auto redirect rules and URL management, see Auto redirects and URL rules.
Next steps
After you complete the checklist:
- When you are ready, follow Connect search engines.
- Follow Optimize a page to update page details in SEO Audit.
- If your store uses more than one language, follow Multilingual SEO.
- Use the Dashboard to monitor SEO health.
If a step does not complete as expected, see Common issues or Contact.
